IOF Connect Interoperability Working Group

Get Involved

Overview and Purpose

This working group will focus on interoperability between connectSpec and IOF, regarding properly representing product information related to product life cycle and product engineering. In the beginning, it will focus on existing standards connectSpec Product Configuration and BOM, as well as how these standards interoperate with other existing standards such as MTConnect, QIF, and STEP. As ontological progress is made, corresponding updates will be applied to connectSpec to ensure a bridge exists between these standards.

The team will be developing an ontology for product lifecycle management, focusing on creating a generic and broad product domain that can be applied across different lifecycle phases without initially incorporating configuration or effectivity aspects. Ontologies should define specific concepts rather than generic ones, allowing for precise categorization and interpretation of data. The group has agreed to start with a product master definition for both engineering and manufacturing bill of materials, while leaving out configuration details to avoid unnecessary complexity in the initial phase.

This group will focus on standardizing terminology across different domains and phases of product lifecycle to improve communication and reduce misinterpretation. There exists a clear necessity for maintaining consistency while allowing for domain-specific terms.
